Selecting the AF Mode

Select the focusing method to match the position and number of subjects.

In an AF mode other than Pinpoint, you can automatically focus by detecting humans and animals.

Press [].

The AF mode selection screen appears.

Select the AF mode.

Press character_left character_right to select an item and then press button_menu-set or button_joy-stick-push_s .

Selection is also possible by pressing [ button_af-mode ].

You can set the AF mode items to be displayed on the AF mode selection screen:

Automatic Detection

When automatic detection is enabled, humans and animals are detected and the camera automatically focuses.

You can set the target for detection.

Set [AF Detection Setting] to [ON].

You can also press character_up in the AF mode selection screen to switch automatic detection [ON]/[OFF].

Select [Detecting Subject].

It is also possible to select by pressing [DISP.] in the AF mode selection screen.

[HUMAN]

Detects human faces, eyes, and bodies.

[ icon_detecting-subject-human ] is displayed on the AF mode icon.

[FACE/EYE]

Detects only human faces and eyes.

[ icon_detecting-subject-face_eye ] is displayed on the AF mode icon.

[ANIMAL+HUMAN]

Detects humans and animals.

Animals that can be detected are birds, canines (including wolves, etc.), and felines (including lions, etc.).

[ icon_detecting-subject-animal ] is displayed on the AF mode icon.

character_diamond When [ icon_23-points-af_blue ]

When the camera detects a person’s face (A)/(B) or body or an animal’s body (C), an AF area is displayed.

If multiple subjects are detected, multiple AF areas are also displayed, and you can select the subject you want to focus on from amongst these.

Yellow

AF area to be brought into focus.

The camera selects this automatically.

Eye detection works only for the eyes inside the yellow frame (A).

White

Displayed when multiple subjects are detected.

character_diamond When [ icon_af-tracking ], [ icon_cus-multi-af-horizontal ], [ icon_cus-mult-af-center ], [ icon_1-area-plus ], or [ icon_1-point-af_blue ]

If even part of a human or animal enters the AF area, these are automatically detected and focused.

If eyes are detected inside the AF area, eye detection (D) works.

It is not possible to change the eye to focus on.

[AF Detection Setting] is applied to all AF modes excluding [ icon_pinpoints-af ].

When a person’s eyes are detected, the eye closer to the camera will be brought into focus.

The exposure will be adjusted to the face. (When [Metering Mode] is set to [ icon_multi-metering ])

The camera can detect the faces of up to 15 people.

The camera can detect a combined total of up to 3 human and animal bodies.

Automatic detection may not be available due to the camera settings.

You can make it so the metering range for automatic exposure is not prioritized on the face and eyes when automatic detection works:

You can make the cross for face/eye detection disappear:

[Tracking]

When the focus mode is set to [AFC], the AF area follows the movement of the subject, maintaining focusing.

Start tracking.

Aim the AF area over the subject, and press the shutter button halfway.

The camera will track the subject while the shutter button is pressed halfway or pressed fully.

If tracking fails, the AF area blinks red.

When set to [AFS], the focus will be on the AF area position. Tracking will not work.

In [ icon_mode-p-motion_table ] mode and while recording video, tracking will continue even if the shutter button is released.

To cancel tracking, press button_menu-set or button_joy-stick-push_s , or touch [ icon_af-select-off_s ].

Tracking is also available with [AFS].

When automatic detection is working, the detected subject is tracked.

Set [Metering Mode] to [ icon_multi-metering ] to continue to adjust the exposure as well.

In the following, [ icon_af-tracking ] operates as [ icon_1-point-af_blue ]:

– [Monochrome]/[L.Monochrome]/[L.Monochrome D]/[L.Monochrome S] ([Photo Style])

– [Sepia] ([Filter Settings])

[ icon_af-tracking ] may not be available due to the camera settings.

Press [] to display the AF mode selection screen.

Select [] and then press .

Press to move the position of the AF area.

Positions can be moved to the diagonal directions using the joystick.

You can also move the AF area by touching.

To return the position back to the center, press [DISP.].

Press .

[Full Area AF]

The camera selects the most optimal AF area to focus from 315 areas.

When multiple AF areas are selected, all selected AF areas will be brought into focus.

When the focus mode is set to [AFC], you can ensure that the focus stays on the subject by recording while keeping the subject within the Full Area AF area.

character_diamond Specify the Person, Animal, or Eye to Bring into Focus

When automatic detection is [ON], multiple subjects are detected.

When the person or animal to be brought into focus is shown using the white AF area, you can change this to a yellow AF area.

Touch operations

Touch the person, animal or eye indicated with the white AF area.

The AF area will change to yellow.

Touching outside the AF area displays the AF area setting screen. Touch [Set] to set the [ icon_1-point-af_blue ] AF area at the position touched.

To cancel the setting, touch [ icon_af-select-off_s ].

Operations with the joystick

Tilt the joystick to character_up character_down character_left character_right .

Each tilt to character_up character_down character_left character_right switches the person, animal or eye to be brought into focus.

Press and hold the joystick to set the [ icon_1-point-af_blue ] AF area to the center of the screen.

Press and hold the joystick again to return to automatic detection.

To cancel the setting, press button_menu-set .

Button operations

Press [] to display the AF mode selection screen.

Select [], [], or [] and then press .

Press to move the position of the AF area.

When the white AF area changes to yellow, press .

If button_menu-set is pressed in a position outside an AF area for humans or animals, the [ icon_1-point-af_blue ] AF area is set.

To cancel the setting, press button_menu-set .

character_diamond Setting the AF Area in Any Position

When [AF Detection Setting] is [OFF], the [ icon_1-point-af_blue ] AF area can be set in any position.

Touch operations

Touch any position on the recording screen and then touch [Set].

The [ icon_1-point-af_blue ] AF area is set.

Touch [ icon_af-select-off_s ] to return to [ icon_23-points-af_blue ].

Operations with the joystick

Press and hold the joystick.

The [ icon_1-point-af_blue ] AF area is set in the center of the screen.

Either press and hold the joystick again or press button_menu-set to return to [ icon_23-points-af_blue ].

You can move and change the size of the set AF area:

When [ icon_cus-multi-af-horizontal ] is selected

Press character_up character_down to switch to a horizontal pattern AF area.

Press character_left character_right to switch to a vertical pattern AF area.

Press [DISP.] to return the AF area position to the center.

When [ icon_cus-multi-af-center ] is selected

Positions can be moved to the diagonal directions using the joystick.

When [] is selected

Rotate image_front-dial_s , image_rear-dial_s or button_control-dial_s to change the size of the AF area.

You can also pinch out/pinch in the AF area to change the size.

The first press of [DISP.] returns the AF area position to the center. The second press returns the size of the AF area to the default.

Press .

[1-Area+]/[1-Area]

Emphasis within a single AF area can be focused.

Even when the subject moves out of the single AF area, the subject remains focused in a supplementary AF area (E).

Effective when recording moving subjects that are difficult to track with [ icon_1-point-af_blue ].

[Pinpoint]

You can achieve a more precise focus on a small point.

If you press the shutter button halfway, the screen that lets you check the focus will be enlarged.

When the focus mode is set to [AFC], [ icon_pinpoints-af ] is not available.

Automatic detection does not work in [ icon_pinpoints-af ].

Positions can be moved to the diagonal directions using the joystick.

The selected position on the screen will be enlarged.

The AF area cannot be moved to the edge of the screen.

Press to fine-adjust the position of [+].

Operations on the Magnification Window

Button operations	Touch operations	Description of operation

	Pinch out/pinch in	Enlarges/reduces the screen in small steps.
	—	Enlarges/reduces the screen.
		Switches magnification window (windowed mode/full screen mode).
[DISP.]	[Reset]	First time: Returns to the screen in Step 3. Second time: Returns the AF area position to the center.

You can enlarge by approx. 3× to 6×.

You can also take a picture by touching [ icon_touch-p-d-c-shutter_s ].
